Apparently, Congressional candidates Aaron Schock, Jim McConoughey and John Morris pretty much agree on everything. Well, except for that one little thing about how one of them advocated a policy that would have caused a war with China over Taiwan. But not that anyone at the GOP forum was so uncouth actually mention that.

Politics: Millionaire public servant Schock says he’s not rich
The first financial disclosure documents in the 18th District have been released. Not one of the GOP members in the race can be described as anything less less than upper middle class.
John Morris is the poor one of the bunch. He reported assets between $101,00 and $341,000. Obviously, he’s done well for himself.
According to...

Politics: Cartoon of the day
From today’s State Journal-Register. It’s not a cartoon you want to see when you’re running for Congress. Unless you’re Jim McConoughey or John Morris.

Local: Peoria media leaves the best line on the cutting room floor, and the national press ignores the whole thing (UPDATE 2x: Daily Kos picks it up, link to Schock’s original words added)
This was the best line out of Jim McConoughey’s press conference about Aaron Schock’s proposal to ignore the Nuclear Proliferation Treaty and sell nuclear weapons to Taiwan:
“This is not a Ronald Reagan idea. This is a Dr. Strangelove idea.”
It’s a great line. It’s the line reporters are looking for when they attend this things....

Politics: McConoughey wins the day v. ‘Aaron Strangelove’
This was not a good day for Aaron Schock.
The former president of the Peoria School Board played principal-for-the-day at Roosevelt Magnet School. It was pure photo-op. If Schock doesn’t know everything he needs to know about education by now, he never will.
But instead of warm-and-fuzzy stories about with pictures of smiling children, the media...

Politics: Schock says McConoughey ‘running in the wrong primary’
From a press release:
(PEORIA) Representative Aaron Schock responded to opponent Jim McConoughey’s criticism of Schock’s recent comprehensive proposal to seek ways of preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons, by pointing out that there are three alternatives:
1. Seek new ways of pressuring China and Russia to heed their UN Security Council responsibilities by...

Politics: Schock nukes-to-Taiwan position is ‘irresponsible,’ opponent says (UPDATED to include text of comments)
Jim McConoughey must have said “naive” and ‘inexperienced” a dozen times during his brief news conference today. Which is pretty must his biggest weapon against Aaron Schock, who was courteous enough to give McConoughey and other opponents John Morris an opening by suggesting that the United States arm Taiwan with nuclear weapons and arm...

Local: Blogger Bash recap (UPDATED 5x)
The bash was a huge success and a fun time was had by all.
Rich Miller of Capitol Fax never showed (too busy rounding up news and gossip out of Springfield, no doubt). None of the students from Jonathan Ahl’s class showed up. There quite a few first-time bashers, from including the folks responsible for...

Politics: McConoughey released rural plan
This is the press release I received from the Jim McConoughey campaign:
McConoughey Releases Rural Initiative Plan on ‘Good Harvest Tour’
Peoria, IL – As the only 18th District Congressional candidate with a farming background, Jim McConoughey intends to be a strong advocate for rural issues when elected to Congress. Starting outside the State Fairgrounds...

Politics: McConoughey to reveal ‘rural initiatives’
A “news advisory” from the Jim McConoughey for Congress campaign:
Jim McConoughey, a candidate for the Republican nomination in the 18th Congressional District, will be holding a series of News Conferences on Wednesday (October 24, 2007). McConoughey will be discussing his Rural Initiatives on which he will focus if he is elected to fill...

Today’s news: Learning something new
Today’s links are via the Journal Star:
Clare Jellick’s article on the Manual restructuring is up. It includes the list of “recommendations” that the various subcommittees working on the plan asked the board to approve. The meat of the story is that they want the new Manual to operate under a longer school day, a...

Politics: Schock raking in the endorsements … except the only one that matters
Fooled me. I thought it was going to be a run-of-the-mill official campaign kickoff.
Turned out Aaron Schock wanted to show off his new acquisitions: Endorsement from some relatively minor Tazewell and Woodford county politicians, including one Democrat. Schock certainly seems to believe racking up a string of endorsements helps his campaign. But why...

Politics: No LaHood snub of Aaron Schock
Intrepid public radio newsie Johnathan Ahl reported in his blog today that the only reason Ray LaHood donated cash to would-be Congressional replacements John Morris and Jim McConoughey and NOT to Aaron Schock is because Schock hasn’t formally announced. So my speculation there’s some sort of anti-endorsement going on is full of it, apparently.
LaHood...

Opinion: Campaign disclosures show Schock is vulnerable
The Journal Star’s lede on the 18th District financial statements is how they raised a combined $600,000. Is that really the most important thing the public needs to know, what the combined total is? It’s like reporting on March 2, 1962, that Philadelphia Warriors players Paul Arizin and Wilt Chamberlain once combined to score...

Politics: Morris collects $218,000 … without any help from PACs
I went through John Morris’s campaign disclosure statements and noticed something odd. The contributions from individuals came to $218,209. That’s about about 60 percent of what State Rep. Aaron Schock collected during the same reporting period. Here’s the difference: Morris received no contributions (with one exception, noted later) from political action committees. Take those...

Politics: McConoughey reports $5,300 contributions in 3rd Quarter
According to documents electronically filed with the Federal Election Commission, 18th District Congressional candidate Jim McConoughey raised just $5,300 in donations during the quarter ending on Sept. 30. The campaign also reported McConoughey made a personal $50,000 loan to his own campaign.
The donations include $2,000 from the Friends of Ray LaHood, $1,000 from Michael...

Politics: Morris winning the race … on the Web
All four candidates for the 18th District seat in Congress have Websites. But only two have the sort of high-quality sites that are needed to reach and impress Internet-savvy voters.
I spent a few minutes looking at the sites, and I have to say that John Morris and Jim McConoughey have the best sites. Both...

Politics: 18th District race wide open, McConoughey survey says
I received the following email from the Jim McConoughey campaign:
Overview: The initial polling numbers for the 18th Congressional District, show the race to be wide open. As the race stands today, among those voters who have a definite opinion of whom they would support, Aaron Shock garners 23%, Jim McConoughey garners 6.6%...
