Here comes the pork

Saturday, November 19th, 2005

The nearly 1.5 million in Peoria-area projects includes $250,000 to help Bradley University renovate Bradley Hall, $250,000 to expand Glen Oak Zoo, $250,000 to Lakeview Museum to help build a downtown museum of Peoria hitory, $500,000 to help rehab roads in Springdale Cemetery and another $200,000 to help the Heartland Clinic bring services to the East Bluff and north valley in Peoria.

My two cents: Bradley University is a private institution. Taxpayers don’t have any say in how BU is run. I shouldn’t be expected to pay for their renovations. Taxpayers already support public colleges and universities, and we don’t need to subsidize private colleges that exist to provide an upscale alternative to public education.

Lakeview is just one of many partners in the history of Peoria museum. Again, taxpayers have no voice in this process, and certainly there are more pressing matters that desperately need funding. Relief for Katrina victims comes to mind.

While roads are infrastructure, I doubt there’s much interstate transportation that’s going to be going on in the cemetery. I’m very sympathetic to Historic Springdale Cemetery, but not to this year. Again, Katrina relief should take priority over this otherwise worthy project.

Of all the projects in this list, the Heartland Clinic is the most worthy of federal spending. I note for the record, however, that it received far less than the others on this list.

Remember folks: There is no such thing as free money from the feds. Every dime we get from Washington D.C. is a dime that we sent to Washingon D.C.

While it’s certainly not always a one-to-one relationship, most communities don’t get more than they put in and Peoria isn’t any different.

Are these the things we want to use our federal tax dollars on? Renovating Bradley Hall? Get real.

It’s been argued that before we start spending money to help the victims of Hurricane Katrina, we cut as much pork as possible out of the federal budget, and only then raise taxes. What we seem to be doing it spending exactly as much on park as we did before — and slap on the tag “Katrina relief” to justify the expense — and continue to slash taxes for a select few.

In other words, we’re sending a huge tax bill to our children and grandchildren.

But that’s OK, because we’re convinced that Peoria will get a million tourists a year who wan’t to see the history of the tractor.

End sarcasm.

LaHood is Porker of the Month

Friday, November 11th, 2005

In addition to voting to deny private citizens the right to discuss politics on the Internet, Peoria’s Congressman, Ray LaHood, is hard at work screwing over Katrina Victims by diverting precious funds for local pork:

Rep. LaHood has teamed up with other lawmakers to procure farm assistance money for Midwestern states, claiming that farmers should be compensated for disruptions to grain shipments on the Mississippi River after Hurricane Katrina. But farmers are already “compensated” by taxpayers to the tune of $17.8 billion per year with most of that money going to large farms and agribusinesses. Illinois farms were the third-highest subsidized in the nation from 1995-2003, according to the Environmental Working Group. Comparing a cyclical drought to the worst natural disaster in U.S. history opens the federal trough to every special interest that can claim it was indirectly affected by the Gulf Coast hurricanes.

Let’s look at the LaHood scorecard:

Pro-censorship: Yes.
Pro-pork: Yes.

President Giuliani?

Sunday, October 2nd, 2005

Rudy is considering a a run in 2008.

He might be the one candidate who can mask that stench in voters’ nostrils from Dubya’s botched handling of Katrina, as well as general voter disatisfaction with all things GOP.

Leave God out of it

Friday, September 23rd, 2005

I find myself in the position of agreeing with Vonster about this post:

I think God is punishing Texas for producing such feeble-minded, selfish choads as our president. It’s like God is saying, “Mr.’s Bush and Cheney, how about YOU go {expletive deleted] yourselves.” Heh Heh. You response, Mr. Bush? “We must keep fighting science in the church, so that science will keep kicking our asses everywhere else.”

God didn’t send Katrina or Rita to to punish anyone. God didn’t send AIDS to kill homosexuals and He certainly didn’t send roadside bombs to kill soldiers because our nation fails to stone homosexuals to death.

This kind of comment is ridiculous whether it’s coming out of the mouth of Pat Robertson, Fred Phelps and Peoria bloggers.

‘Taking resposibility’ means taking the blame

Tuesday, September 13th, 2005

One of the knocks against President Clinton was that he didn’t fire Attorney General Janet Reno after she took responsibility after a tank attack on the Branch Davidian compound n Waco ended in flames and mass death.

I know wonder what those same conservative critics think should happen to President Bush now that he says
“I take responsibility” for the problem-plagued relief effort?

No doubt they are blaming every single elected official in three states, but excusing Bush and his cronies.

Peoria might not even get any evacuees

Sunday, September 11th, 2005

Peoria government and volunteer organizations have put in huge numbers of hours getting ready to care for Hurricane Katrina evacuees. Now, it looks like there’s a question whether we are going to get any at all.

That’s actually good news, not because we don’t want them here. Peorians want to help and most of us are eager to do their part.

If we don’t get any evacuees — that’s because there’s not a great a need as people feared . We’re already hearing reports that the death toll might not be as high as predicted as well.

The kind of services that this city would have provided the evacuees would have been the same kind of services provided local residents after a local disaster of some sort. So even if Peoria isn’t called upon to house folks escaping Katrina, the preparations were a dry run local officials.
