Sin of omission: JS keeps public in the dark about scope of Carver Lumber losses due to Kellar Branch project

January 26, 2006
By Billy Dennis

I’n no fan of the Journal Star’s editorial page. Time and again, the newspaper prints editorials that cross the line from opinion and into the relm of deceptive propaganda. There are simply some issues that this paper will not cover fairly on the front page or the editorial page. The Kellar Branch story is one...

Carver’s $25,000 loss isn’t important enough to mention

January 21, 2006
By Billy Dennis

There’s something missing from today’s Journal Star article about the Surface Transportation Board’s decision to not close the Kellar Branch: The city and park district have only been trying to get the deal done for a decade or so. But on Friday, the STB put the project back on hold, based on recent complaints from...

Carver Lumber wins: The STB stays Kellar closure

January 20, 2006
By Billy Dennis

Leave it to C.J. Summers to be on top of the Kellar Branch closure case. He’s reporting that the Surface Transporation agrees with Carver Lumber that the Kellar Branch cannot be closed until the City of Peoria finishes work on a new line allowing the lumber company to receive deliveries. The decision states: The Board’s...

A challenge to the Peoria Rails Group

By Billy Dennis

The Peoria Rails Yahoo Group is a good place to go for news, information and commentary about the controversy over the efforts to turn the Kellar Branch rail line into a segment of the Rock Island Trail. The buzz these days is about Carver Lumber’s efforts to get the Surface Transportation to overturn earlier...

Peoria: ‘It would not be appropriate’ to keep Carver Lumber from leaving city

January 20, 2006
By Billy Dennis

The City of Peoria’s legal staff has responded to Carver Lumber’s request to the Surface Transportation Board to re-open the Kellar Branch. It seems Carver has lost $25,000 since the line was closed. Leave it to C.J. Summers to provide spot-on commentary on the matter: That’s what the city’s attorney Tom McFarland wrote to the Surface...

The Peoria Chronicle: Pioneer appeals STB ruling

January 14, 2006
By Billy Dennis

C.J. Summers has all the insight one needs on Pioneer Railcorp’s appeal of the STB ruling to close the Kellar Branch: Pioneer has been trying to delay the city’s plans to turn the Kellar Branch into a trail for quite a while now. What’s different this time is they have a new ally of sorts....

Will Carver Lumber take a hike outside city limits?

January 11, 2006
By Billy Dennis

C.J. Summers asks a damn good question: Isn’t it news that the City of Peoria is directly responsible for over $25,000 in additional transportation costs for one of its local businesses? Isn’t that outrageous enough to warrant an editorial, or at least a front-page story in the local section? I sure think so. Fortunately,...

August 30, 2005
By Billy Dennis

UPDATE: 4:30 p.m. A page with some pics of the rail cars involved in the accident. The following information was posted in a Yahoo group and found its way to my Inbox. The Peoria Police Department confirms some of the details, including that a runaway train plowed through seven Peoria intersections. I’ve edited...

And Mrs. Railroad isn’t too happy about it

August 18, 2005
By Billy Dennis

I learned in journalism school that a good copy editor has to have a dirty mind, because the readers certainly do. Take, for example, this this headline from the Journal Star: Railroad pulls out early Perhaps Viagra might help. Pioneer Railcorp,Guy Brenkman,Kellar Branch,PAMBA,Rock Island Trail.Journal Star, headlines
