Unless otherwise noted, all links are via the Peoria Journal Star. The snarky commentary is my own.
- No link here, but I need to let everyone know that Peoria Pundit Radio is going silent, for the time being at least. My work schedule changed and I no longer have Sunday evenings free. But I do have Friday evenings off, but no one, absolutely NO ONE, wants to listen or call into a show on Friday night. And my other day off is taken up by Peoria City Council meetings. So rather that flail away at a dead horse, I’m calling it quits on the show. My apologies to the seven people who’ve listened live.
- Vis tha Chicago Sun-Times, an article on the GOP’s failed attempts to find adequate candidates for the 11th and 14th Congressional Districts. The Aaron Schock/Colleen Callahan race in the 18th gets a mention too, with Schock portrayed at the wunderkind, again. It’s getting a bit cliche, folks.
- Meanwhile, Karen McDonald reports in today’s Word on the Street that GOP is all one happy family, rallying behind Schock. Trust me people, for every Republican who’s enthused, there is another who is resigned to their fate.
- Another man was allegedly robbed in this alleged newspaper article written by an alleged reporter.
- Meanwhile, here’s a list of dangerous drug criminals.
- Morton is going to hike its hotel tax, generating dozens of dollars.
- Good article by Andy Kravetz on those who are mourning the loss of Matt Maupin.
- My compliments to the OSF public relations department for managing to get what amounts to a press release printed as legitimate news in the Peoria Journal Star. Of course, some sourpuss used the comments section to suggest that the money spent on those murals might be better used to pay workers better. Which, according to rumor, also improves morale. But then, what do I know.
- A three-year-old is slapped and kicked in the genitals by the man his mother is screwing. When you talk to child abuse and domestic violence experts, they will tell you that this thing happens across all economic and social classes. But as a guy who has gone through tens of thousands of police reports over the years, I can say there is one element that is almost always a constant: Boyfriends are much, much, much more likely to abuse women and children that are husbands and fathers.
- I’m not opposed to Pat Quinn’s desire to give voters the power to recall elected officials. But I don’t see how we can expect Illinois voters to make better decisions than we make on regular elections. After all, it was a well-established fact that Gov. Rod Blagojevich was an incompetent hack, probably corrupt as all Hell, during the last gubernatorial election. But we voted for him because we well for his line of craps about passing out all kinds of goodies like health care for children without raising taxes.

The show starts at 6 p.m. and can be heard here. The call-in number is (347) 326-9459.
As usual, I found a few simple links to blog entries that discuss autism, especially as it relates to vaccinations:
Here is one that claims a government concession that vaccinations can cause autism.
And here is one that discusses the false conclusions and research from “dubious” scientists that drives the myth of an autism/vaccination link.
And the Karen McCarron case is going to come up as well. Here is a blog entry about folks who are a buit upset at the comments made that seem to suggest that raising an autistic child is such a horrible experience, that that McCarron did might be understandable, even if not condoned.
And If I get enough callers, I doubt I’ll be playing those Superman audios I promised.
And here is some history of Superman, since the lack of callers means I did have to play them after all.

The following is Air America talk show host Randi Rhodes in the midst of the NOT SAFE FOR WORK tirade against Hillary Clinton, Geraldine Ferraro, Eliot Spitzer and others that got her suspended for her gig:
Rhodes looks a little bit like Ann Coulter. Trouble is, she sounds like Coulter too, and not just because her targets in this case are Democrats. At least Coulter manages to get her point across without dropping the F-bomb every other sentence.

April is autism month. I thought it appropriate to devote at least one Peoria Pundit Radio segment to debate on the myths and reality surrounding this condition. The next show is scheduled for 6 p.m. Friday — that’s two days from now. Autism certainly has been in the news recently, from Sen. John McCain jumping on the autism is caused by vaccines bandwagon, to Karen McCarron’ sentencing for killing her daughter with autism. So I’m hoping for a lively debate. Please call at (347) 326-9459.
UPDATE: This is shaping up to be quite a show. I have commitments for call-ins from quote a few people. I hope this sparks some meaningful discussion.

For those who were wondering, I’ve moved this week’s PeoriaPunditRadio show to this Tuesday. The scheduled topic is the situation in Tibet, plus local news and information, plus two “Fibber McGee and Molly” episodes.
The show can be heard here. Callers are welcome at (347) 326-9459.
As a matter of fact, it looks like I’ll be working Sunday nights from now on, so I’ll be needing to permanently reschedule. Tuesday is problematic because every other Tuesday is a city council meeting. The other day off is Friday now, which is a lousy time to try to get anyone to listen. And besides, I’d kinda like to have Fridays free, too.

One of the disadvantages to scheduling shows in advance is that I sometimes find out later that my work schedule has changed. So, I will be working Sunday and won’t be able to broadcast tomorrow’s show about China and Tibet.
I’ll reschedule for a later date.
It’s too bad because there is so much to talk about.

Frequent commenter Shaun Bill sent me the following e-mail:
Hey Bill – FYI
I will be on the Doc & Kotter show on 96.5 ESPN between 5 and 7pm tomorrow, March 12. I will be talking about my recent hockey road trip.
Kudos to Shaun. If I cared about hockey, I might listen. Heh. Just kidding. I LOVE hockey. I just wasn’t away they still played the game …
Also:
- I woke up too late to catch Jonathan Ahl’s report on Colleen Callahan’s announcement. I’ll see if it’s on the air this afternoon.
- The next issue if Illinois Issues will be out soon, I hear. I got interviewed by for two different articles, so the odds of them actually using my quotes are good. But then, I’ve conducted long interviews befor, only to be left out of the actual reporting. I’ll post a link when one is available.
- And someone from another Peoria publication has sent me a request for an interview. I’ll see if we can arrange some time together.
- And I am still looking for someone to interview for Sunday’s radio show (WARNING: Clicking link causes audio to play) who’s familiar with the litter and trash situation in Peoria. The call in number is (347) 326-9459.
UPDATE: Always a mensch (look it up), Mr. Ahl has emailed me the audio file to the story on Callahan. Listen to it is you must. I may have a face made for radio, but I have a voice made for print. I need one of those devices that make everyone sound like Barry White.

My last attempt at using BlogTalkRadio didn’t work out all that well. I’m told that the glitches are now over, and that neither I nor would be callers will have trouble getting connected.
Let’s hope so, because I’ve scheduled my second show for 6 p.m. (Central) Sunday, March 9.
The subject will be the decision Illinois voters will make in November whether or not there should be a new constitutional convention. The League of Women Voters has some background detail here regarding the process.
I am looking for guests willing be be interviewed on the air. Naturally, I want people with both pro and con positions. And of course, local folks are more than willing to call in and give their two cents.
I’d also like to hear what changes people would like to see in the state constitution. Here are a couple I’d like to see:
- Term limits for leaders of the state house and senate. I’m not talking about term limits for the house of senate seats, but limits on how long someone can be speaker of the house or senate president.
- A constitutional prohibition against using any taxpayer money as an incentive to lure a business from one part of the state to another. I would allow money to be used to provide information that might convince a business to move across the state, But no tax incentives. No enterprise zones. No TIF districts. Naturally, I’d like to see something like this in effect nationwide.
Details such as call-in numbers are available here.
UPDATE: John Bambenek of the Illinois Citizen’s Coalition, a proponent of a Con-Con, will be my first guest on the hour long show. I’ll interview him, then open the phones up for questions.
UPDATE 2: I’m bumping this up a bit.

UPDATE: After 10 minutes of a message telling me that”no web audio servers are available,” I gave up. I wish BlogTalkRadio the best. I didn’t even know if I was on the air or not. Apparently, they will need it.
NOTE: I’m going on the air in 40 minutes.
I’ve been a little under the weather, so I don’t know how long my voice will hold out. I’m HOPING that I get some callers today (show starts at 4 p.m. and can be heard here) to take some of the pressure off. The listener call-in number is (347) 326-9459.
What’s on the agenda? I want to talk about the elections, specifically Jehan Gordon’s victory over Allen Mayer, Aaron Schock’s victory over John Morris and Jim McConoughey, and the whole presidential drama.
Locally, I want to get into what’s upcoming with the Peoria City Council, including taking odds on whether or not the city will pass it’s own smoking ban ordinance AND the odds of passage of any increase in the HRA tax rate. And I want to touch on security at Peoria City Hall, and what, if anything, the city should do in light of what happened in Kirkwood, MO.

I was a guest on Mark W. Johnson’s IL GOP Blog radio show last night, providing commentary on national and state races. At least I was until my cell phone battery went out.
It as my first experience with BlogTalkRadio, and I was impressed. I just called a number (long-distance, unfortunately) and I was on the air waiting for the bumper music to end. I’ve fiddled around with different podcasting via phone services and found them dry and lacking in user support.
So, I signed up for a BlogTalkRadio account and snooped around. First, I noticed how easy it is to sign up. Then I noticed how easy it is to schedule a show. They’ve got a switch board that lets hosts play uploaded sound clips, bring callers into the discussion and release them.
My inaugural program will begin at 4 p.m. Sunday. I don’t have anyone scheduled to be a gst (I’ll see that develops) and anyone who wants to call in can do so at by dialing (347) 326-9459. It’s a long distance call, so you might want to use a cell phone (if weekend minutes are free) or your Vonage or Skype phone.
The topic of this first show? Anything I’ve discussed on the blog is fair game. If you’ve got a beet with me, now might be the time to try to put me in my place. The operative word is “try.”
Peoria Pundit Radio is here. Also, I’m maintaining a page on the blog with an embedded player.

I’ve accepted a last-minute invitation from Mark W. Johnson to be on the Illinois GOP Network’s BlogTalkRadio program.
I’ll be providing “analysis.” I wonder if Mark knows that I’m not a GOPer, but a small-L libertarian who didn’t even vote today?
Anyway, I’m going to be on shortly after 8 p.m. If anyone wants to call in the number is (646) 716-8366, but call after 8:30 p.m. Since it’s a toll call, I’d advise you to use Vonage or Skype.
For more in-depth, wall-to-wall coverage, I’d recommend going over to WCBU and listen to Jonathan Ahl and C.J. Summers. Wait until I’m off the air, natually.

So, I’m listening to Dr. Dean Edell today and I have an epiphany.
I like Dr. Edell’s show. He consistently gives good advice best on the available science. He gives tons of grief to quack cures, superficial reporting on medicine and science and politicians who meddle where they don’t belong.
Recently, the good doctor has started bringing his producer Heather into the on air discussion. They now have a schtick in which he calls her “Nurse Heather.” Today, he commented on her clean white nurse uniform. As radio banter goes, it barely qualifies as risque, but it is an obvious attempt to insert sex into the program.
I’m listening to this and a thought occurs to me: “Boy, doesn’t he realize it’s going to lower his credibility with some people.”
And then a second thought occurs to me: ‘Oh. Yeah. Now I get it. That’s what people were telling for years when I ran eye candy pics on a blog that’s supposed to be about news, politics and media.’
So that’s why you don’t see that stuff here anymore. Mostly.

Jonathan Ahl reports that his station, WCBU, is going to participate in the Primary Place program being offered though New Hampshire Public Radio. Essentially, it lets ordinary folks post questions and comments about the upcoming presidential race, which the good people of Exeter, NH, can then bring to the attention of the candidates that pay sooooooo much attention to that tiny state (while virtually ignoring larger states with more voters, like, say, ILLINOIS). It’s the next best thing to having a primary that actually matters.

I’ve flirted with the idea of trying my hand at a daily or weekly podcast, but this Vaspers the Grate post leaves me wondering if I should even bother:
According to a new Pew Research podcast usage report, in the Pew newsletter that entered my email inbox today, only 1% of Internet users download a podcast, on any given day, for later listening. But 17% of Internet users have downloaded a podcast at some time in the past. I would be more interested in how many have subscribed to podcast channels and how many are doing their own podcasts.
My guess is that people are far more interested in hearing music, than in hearing lectures, interviews, and other verbal ramblings. Why download a podcast that you’ll only listen to one time, and maybe not the entire thing if it gets boring, which most are?
Well out of the millions and millions of blogs that exist, how many of them have any interest to anyone other than the blogger’s immediate friends and family, if that. In the end, the quality of the content that matters. And of course, whether the podcast has to be marketed to enough people to create an audience large enough to sustain itself.
Still I have to think that there is an audience. Not every news junkie wants to sit in front of a monitor all day. Some folks might prefer to hear, rather than read, what blogs have to offer.
I’d give it a try, but it’s more of an effort that I have time and energy to expend. Besides, I have a voice like a 7-year-old girl on helium, and would probably need to digitally alter it so I sound like James Earl Jones in order for anyone to stand to hear it for longer than 30 seconds.
